On stairways you reach the former mountain village of Pianicello, 370 m high above sea level. The simple old farmhouses have been left in their original simplicity. Rainwater is collected on the roofs and drawn from cisterns. Each house has its own cistern, the water content of which supplies the residents during the summer months. Today, almost every house in Pianicello has a solar system that supplies the house with electricity.
Since 1986, the land and houses in Pianicello have been cultivated again: new trees are planted, wild olive trees are grafted and vegetables, fruits and capers are harvested. Planting and reforestation not only prevent progressive erosion, but also promote the moisture balance of the soil.
The beauty of the landscape and architecture, the clean air and the Mediterranean climate make Pianicello/Alicudi a particularly suggestive place.
